This cast of a Megalonyx claw was 3-D scanned with a Go!Scan50 scanner in December 2018 at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia. The original giant ground sloth (Megalonyx jeffersonii) claw was sent to Thomas Jefferson in the late 1700s from a cave in what is now West Virginia.Repository specimen number ANSP 12507. It was recovered from Big Bone Lick, Kentucky by William Clark in 1807 for Thomas Jefferson. Courtesy of the Academy of Natural Sciences. A Virginia Commonwealth University Seed Grant supported the research trip that made this scanning effort possible. This ornately carved sandstone monument, said to weigh 20 tons and standing 2 meters high, is at the Archaeological Park and Ruins of Quiriguá, an inscribed UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Department of Izabal, Guatemala. The piece was 3D laser scanned in 2019 during our extensive documentation survey at the site by our USF Libraries DHHC team. We utilized structured light scanners at various sub-millimetric resolutions on this monument. Besides the rich iconography carved on this ceremonial throne, the text in the cartouches describe the founding of the Quiriguá dynasty (see also Matthew Looper’s Quirigua: A Guide to an Ancient Maya City, 2007 for discussion and additional references). This is a very “quick’n’dirty” test I decided to finally upload as a first entry to the #AgisoftClothesChallenge . It’s not great, it’s not that bad either… This jacket is a replica of the black paneled uniform worn by military members of the Atlantis expedition in the Sci-Fi show Stargate Atlantis, and this specific version, made of ripstop fabric, is worn by John Sheppard during seasons 2 and 3 of the show. This motorcycle was scanned with both Eva and Space Spider. Eva allowed for fast and easy acquisition of the overall shape, while Space Spider was used to scan the intricate geometry of the wheels and the sides. We first sprayed the bike with anti-gloss spray. The seat and gas tank had no features, but we stuck a couple of pieces of masking tape to them and that was enough to ensure stable. We didn’t have to add an extra features to the parts we scanned with Space Spider since all of these mechanical parts had rich geometry. There were a lot of these parts though and the shapes were quite complex, consequently it took quite a long time to scan them all. One of the highlights of the scanning was the bike chain: due to its thin and repetitive shape, we expected it to be a challenging object, but Spider’s scanning depth was deep enough to capture the background behind it. Scanning time: Eva - 15 min.
