The medieval chess pieces from the Scottish island of Lewis are among our most popular collections. They give us fascinating insights into the international connections of western Scotland and the growing popularity of chess in medieval Europe. The eleven chess pieces on display in the Museum of Scotland were part of a large hoard buried on Lewis. The hoard contained 93 gaming pieces in total, including at least four chess sets as well as pieces from other games. The chess pieces were probably made in the late 12th or early 13th century in Norway. Pre-Columbian Maya bat god sculpture curated in the Museo Popol Vuh in Guatemala City- Catalogue no. 2005-0032. This sculpture dates to the Late Preclassic and could likely originates from the Copan area of Honduras, bordering Guatemala. The monument is tenoned and could have been used as ornamentation on a structure. The glyphic text on the head and back of the piece relate to the monument’s dedication and ownership. For 137 years, England and Australia’s cricket teams have competed for ownership of ‘The Ashes’. The series of matches is so named following England’s unexpected defeat to Australia in the summer of 1882. The telescope was of compact size and offered quick disassembly, making it a convenient portable instrument. It was brought to the Astronomical Observatory in Kraków in 1834 by Józef Łęski. The medieval chess pieces from the Scottish island of Lewis are among our most popular collections. They give us fascinating insights into the international connections of western Scotland and the growing popularity of chess in medieval Europe. Over eight centuries old, the Bimaristan Nur al-Din, is the earliest surviving site for the development of Islamic medicine. Throughout the building’s lifetime, the site has functioned as a medical school as well as a place of healing in the heart of the old city of Damascus. The head is unprovenanced, but these objects are particularly well-attested at the sites of Bubastis and Saqqara. The model has had several parts removed and paint stripped back during an historic attempt at restoration, which has frustrated specific identification. Some elements are suggestive of a Mediaeval cog, especially hull dimensions, keel design and clinker build. Another comparison would be a mid-to-late-18th-century or early 19th-century merchant, or naval, brig. Brigs were two-masted, square-rigged ships which normally had a spanker sail set on the lower mainmast. The foremast was the shorter of the two masts. They were used as both naval and merchant vessels. If this ship is based on a naval vessel it would be classed as a sixth-rate (having 20-28 guns on a single deck) as there are 22 gun-ports.
