If there is one essential monument in Vigo, that’s the monument to Jules Verne (42.241217, -8.722885). The great writer devoted a chapter to “The Bay of Vigo” in one of his most famous books, 20,000 Leagues under the Sea, fuelling the legend of the Rande treasure with the adventures of its popular main character, Captain Nemo, and his famous Nautilus. Jules Verne even came to visit the city some time after writing the novel, so in his honour and on the centenary of his death (2005), the Association of Women Entrepreneurs of Pontevedra commissioned this bronze sculpture from local artist José Molares and donated it to the city. Since then, the writer has been sitting on the tentacles of a giant squid in the Avenidas, next to the Montero Ríos gardens. Tomb of Tự Đức (Vietnamese: Lăng Tự Đức), officially Khiêm Mausoleum (Khiêm Lăng, Hán tự: 謙陵), is located in Huế, Vietnam. It is built for the Nguyễn Emperor Tự Đức and took three years to build from 1864–1867. It is divided into a Temple Area and a Tomb Area. Emperor Tu Duc enjoyed the longest reign of any monarch of the Nguyen dynasty, ruling from 1848-1883. Although he had 104 wives and concubines, he was unable to father a son (possibly he became sterile after contracting smallpox). Welcome to The Hallwyl Museum in Stockholm, Sweden. Once the home of Walther and Wilhelmina von Hallwyl. The Vestibule was the main entrance where both the Hallwyls and their guests entered the house. When you walk up the stairs you will see portraits of mainly Walther von Hallwyl´s ancestors. The portraits here date from the 16th to the 19th century. Walther and Wilhelmina inherited the portraits along with the family’s main seat, the medieval castle Schloss Hallwil in Switzerland. As they wanted to leave the castle with all its furnishings intact the ancestral portraits were copied by the artist Julius Kronberg. The originals were sent back to Switzerland when the Stockholm house was bequeathed to the Swedish state. The Machine Gun Bunker of Alhama de Murcia is one of the best examples of 20th century military architecture in the Region of Murcia. Its design and construction is part of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), possibly built in 1937, forming part of the Ground Defense Plan of the naval base of Cartagena, strategic installation, from the military point of view, for the survival of the Republic. The bunker is essentially built in concrete, a scarce and valuable material during the war that was only used in priority military installations. It conserves its two lateral entrances. Inside the bunker is divided into 3 spaces, two of them for the placement of heavy machine guns and the third to the storage of supplies and ammunition, also serving as a refuge. This sculpture dates to the Late Preclassic and could likely originates from the Copan area of Honduras, bordering Guatemala. This helmet, with its rather special appearance, is one of the few preserved objects that we know was owned by the Swedish king Gustav Vasa. It was made in Germany in 1540, probably in Augsburg or Nuremberg, which were home to some of the most skilled armour makers of the time. The visor, the part that covers the face, did not originally belong to the helmet, but it is thought to be of the same period. A helmet of this type was made not for battle but for celebratory occasions. In the 16th century, full suits of steel armour were the height of fashion. For parades and other royal festivities, the social elite would dress up in specially-made sets of costume armour with a close helmet. During these celebrations it became popular, in the early 16th century, to wear close helmets with grotesque visors in the form of animal or human faces, like this one, to enhance the festive atmosphere and heighten the sense of theatricality. Alaxuluxen, the Chumash name for the Chumash Painted Cave State Historic Park is situated on the edge of the traditional Barbareño Chumash territory, which ranged from the Pacific coast to the foothills and southern slopes of the Santa Ynez Mountains. Although the precise dates of the interior paintings aren’t known, ceremonial use of the cave was discontinued in the 1700s with Spanish contact.
