Ce tant, a fait partie de l’armement du Joshua, le bateau du célèbre navigateur Bernard Moitessier, « le vagabond des mers du Sud ». Instrument inventé pour la navigation marine, il permet de se localiser en mesurant l’angle entre l’horizon et un objet lointain (clocher, montagne) ou un astre (Soleil, Lune ou étoile).
Il est composé d’une petite lunette, pour viser l’horizon, de deux miroirs (qui projettent l’image de l’objet visé), d’un bras mobile et d’un arc de cercle gradué sur lequel on lit l’angle formé entre l’objet visé et l’horizon. L’angle d’ouverture est de 60°, d’où le nom de l’instrument.

Le Condor des Andes, Vultur gryphus (Linné, 1758), rapace charognard, est le plus grand oiseau terrestre de l’hémisphère ouest. Ce vautour fut vénéré par les peuples incas et des fêtes lui sont encore consacrées. Sa silhouette imposante lui a valu de figurer sur de nombreux symboles nationaux des pays andins et il continu d’inspirer les hommes en tant qu’animal puissant capable d’atteindre les plus hautes cimes. Malheureusement, aujourd’hui, la population de condors des Andes est en décroissance continuelle.
Ce spécimen mâle, a été collecté en Patagonie, en 1831, par Alcide Dessalines d’Orbigny (1802-1857). Aujourd’hui ce condor est conservé au Muséum d’histoire naturelle de La Rochelle, ville où le naturaliste vécut son enfance.

Cooperation with our friends at G-3D-PrintThe front cover of the jetski was scanned using Artec Leo in 15 minutes (including chalc sraying, markers, etc.) and the post-process workflow took about 60 minutes in Artec Studio. The jetski belongs to the world champion György Kasza and his team. The purpose of the scan is to make a perfect fit bespoke fabricated composite cover, therefore some reverse engineering was necessary to get a native CAD data (step) to be able to machine the mold for the composite. For this, weve sed Quicksurface’s Autosurface option to get the nurbs surface based on the HQ mesh. 3D scan of a tuatara (Sphenodon punctatus), a lizard that lives on small islands off the coast of New Zealand. The tuatara has a strong, stocky body. The neck, back and tail bear a crest of long scales. The animals reach a total length of 65 to 75 cm and are crepuscular and nocturnal.
This specimen is Number 68 of the NHM Top 100 and can be found in Hall 27 of the Natural History Museum Vienna.

In the early days of the RISD Nature Lab, founder, Edna Lawrence, would source fresh chicken feet from a local butcher in Providence and allow students to manipulate the the malleable specimens to better inform their anatomical illustrations. Many former students still vividly remember how Ms. Lawrence would pull on the exposed tendons of a chicken foot to demonstrate how it would still engage the digits. Though shocking to some, her characteristic hands-on approach to learning nurtured curisoity and understanding in her students.

In Austria the black swan is an alien species which breeds irregularly elsewhere. In Vienna a breeding population with up to 170 individuals became extinct in the late nineties.
The exhibited specimen has been donated to the NHM Vienna in 1921 by the “Tiergarten Schönbrunn”.
