3D scan of a dodo skeleton. This specimen probably was put together from the remains of several birds. There is no complete dodo skeleton left, nevertheless the NHM Vienna owns one of the most complete skeletons. Dodos lived exclusively on the islands of Mauritius and Reunion. The last dodo probably went extinct about 1690. The dodo is Number 80 of the NHM Top 100 and can be found in Hall 31 of the NHM Vienna. Specimen: Raphus cucullatus (Linnaeus, 1758) Inventory number: NHMW-Zoo-VS 1.471 Collection: Natural History Museum Vienna, 1st Zoological Dept., Bird Coll. 3D scan of a skull cast of the three-horned dinosaur Triceratops horridus. Triceratops lived during the latest Cretaceous in what is now North America. It was one of the largest horned dinosaurs and could reach a weight up to 10 tons. Its skull alone could grow over 2 meters in length! The name Triceratops is derived from the Greek words trí- (τρί-) meaning ‘three’, kéras (κέρας) meaning ‘horn’, and ṓps (ὤψ) meaning ‘face’. This cast of the Triceratops horridus skull can be found in Hall 10 of the NHM Vienna next to the T. rex skull. 3D scan of a primeval dwarf horse (Eurohippus messelensis) fossil from Messel, which is todays Darmstadt, Germany. Fossils from this area are extraordinarily good preserved. That is because 47 million years ago there was a tropical forest around Lake Messel, and on its floor the oxygen-deprived environment prevented decomposition of the corpses that sunk into the lake. This primeval dwarf horse of Messel is Number 28 of the NHM Top 100 and can be found in Hall 9 in Showcase 68 at the NHM Vienna. Specimen: Eurohippus messelensis (Haupt, 1925) Inventory Number: NHMW-Geo 1993/0035/0001 Collection: Natural History Museum Vienna, Geology & Paleontology Dept., Vetrebrate Coll. 3D scan of a trumpeter swan (Cygnus buccinator), which is the largest native water bird in Northern America and has been widespread there. These birds are around 1.5 meters long, with a wingspan of more than 2 meters. Trumpeter swans got their vernacular name due to their trumpet-like calls. This also reflects the scientific species name derived from “buccinare” – to trumpet. The exhibited specimen originates from the Tiergarten Nürnberg and came to the NHM Vienna in 1978. This trumpeter swan can be found in Hall 30 of the Natural History Museum Vienna. Specimen: Cygnus buccinator Richardson, 1832 Inventory number: NHMW-Zoo1-VS 75374 Collection: Natural History Museum Vienna, 1st Zoological Dept., Bird Coll.
