This ornately carved sandstone monument, said to weigh 20 tons and standing 2 meters high, is at the Archaeological Park and Ruins of Quiriguá, an inscribed UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Department of Izabal, Guatemala. The piece was 3D laser scanned in 2019 during our extensive documentation survey at the site by our USF Libraries DHHC team. We utilized structured light scanners at various sub-millimetric resolutions on this monument. Besides the rich iconography carved on this ceremonial throne, the text in the cartouches describe the founding of the Quiriguá dynasty (see also Matthew Looper’s Quirigua: A Guide to an Ancient Maya City, 2007 for discussion and additional references). During the construction of a new riverside wall in 1962 in London, the remains of an interesting ship were found. Dating evidence from the timbers and a coin found in the mast step placed the ship as likely being built, and sunk, during the Roman period, specifically in the 2nd Century CE. However, the ship was constructed in the Celtic tradition. The reconstruction is based primarily on the excavation report by Peter Marsden published by English Heritage, “Ships of the Port of London – First to eleventh Centuries AD”. It contained detailed drawings of the remains and reconstruction drawings. Where no evidence remained, such as for the sails and the rear of the ship, Roman period iconography and other Roman period shipwrecks from northern Europe were used as inspiration. The sail plan is based of the Torlonia relief, and the nearly intact mast of a Roman period ship found in Bruges, Belgium. The deckhouse for the cabin is based off the well preserved cabin of the De Meern 1 shipwreck in the Netherlands 3D Model is ready to download for free, this model contains 1203123 polygons.

This pack contains a selection of low-poly, real-time-ready, wicker baskets and woven bags appropriate for most Mediterranean (Inc. Middle East and North Africa) or European historical, or historical-fantasy, settings. The sources for these were primarily archaeological finds and iconography from throughout the Roman Empire. However, similar baskets could be found elsewhere throughout the Middle Ages and in to the modern period. Basket weaving technology has remained pretty stable for thousands of year. The woven items are more Mediterranean specific, as they were usually made of palm fronds - the two bags are based on Roman mosaics and archaeological finds from Egypt and come in various different positions. The woven purse is based off of a Roman-period archaeological find from the site of San Rossore in Pisa 3D Model is ready to download for free, this model contains 35112 polygons.

Two Komainu #3 (Guardian Lions) from Shinto Shrine A pair of stone lion-dogs often flank the sandō near the entrance to the shrine or the haiden. These komainu, as the statues are known, are guardian figures believed to protect the space around the kami from evil. The ultimate origins of these lionlike figures probably extend back to ancient India or even Egypt, but the more immediate source would appear to be Chinese. Guardian lions and other divine beasts were probably imported from Tang China, along with Buddhism, via the Korean Peninsula, accounting for their alternate name, kōrai-inu, or Korean dogs. Most komainu closely resemble the so-called Chinese lion-dog. Typically, one of the creatures is depicted with its mouth open and the other with its mouth closed. This tradition has no relationship to Shintō per se but derives from Buddhist iconography, where it is used to represent the sacred utterance Aum - Two Komainu #3 from Shinto Shrine. --------------------------------------------------------- Obtained from 33 photographs. The Queen of the Night is a Mesopotamian terracotta plaque in high relief of the Isin-Larsa- or Old-Babylonian period, depicting a winged, , goddess-like figure with bird’s talons, flanked by owls, and perched upon two lions. The relief is displayed in the British Museum in London, which has dated it between 1800 and 1750 BCE. It originates from southern Mesopotamia, but the exact find-site is unknown. Apart from its distinctive iconography, the piece is noted for its high relief and relatively large size, which suggest that it was used as a cult relief, making it a very rare survival from the period. However, whether it represents Lilitu, Inanna/Ishtar, or Ereshkigal is under debate. The authenticity of the object has been questioned from its first appearance in the 1930s, but opinion has generally moved in its favour over the subsequent decades 3D Model is ready to download for free, this model contains 19998 polygons.
