Alaxuluxen, the Chumash name for the Chumash Painted Cave State Historic Park is situated on the edge of the traditional Barbareño Chumash territory, which ranged from the Pacific coast to the foothills and southern slopes of the Santa Ynez Mountains. Although the precise dates of the interior paintings aren’t known, ceremonial use of the cave was discontinued in the 1700s with Spanish contact. However, the connection to the cave has not been lost to the Chumash today. The name of the cave, Alaxuluxen, comes from current Chumash elder Ernestine Ygnacio-De Soto’s great-great grandmother, Maria Ygnacio, who was the daughter of the last wot or chief of Syukhtun. After returning home, I felt the need to model some of the places I was in, and this is the first model. Fully done with Blender, from texturing to modeling, in the lapse of two days. This is a 3D model is from a laser scanning survey of the remains of a slave house chimney (Chimney 3) from the Stafford Plantation on Cumberland Island National Seashore. The Chimneys are a series of 26 hearth and brick remains in three parallel rows that are found nearby the main Stafford plantation house. The site is undergoing restoration treatments and our 3D survey was performed prior to that work, digitally documenting and preserving the site for archival purposes. Our 3D work is additionally assistive with preservation planning and supportive of management needs, and can be utilized for structural repair documentation, monitoring, and condition assessment. Using these models, 3D prints can also be made to examine construction techniques in tactile ways.
