In the 1840s the then owner Alex Batchelor extensively decorated the house with seashells, both inside and out. Alex also went on the decorate his own coffin which was also adorned with sea shells which he charged people to see. Restoration work was carried out on the exterior in 1968 and 2010. The house is situated on the corner of Elizabeth Place and High Street West which form part of the main road through Anstruther, this leaves the building and its decoration vulnerable to damage from large vehicles negotiating the corner. Something that makes this site unusual is that parts of the antennas and their turntables still survive here. After the war the site was partially dismantled then some buildings/structures blown up with explosives. Damage to the floors indicate where some of the charges were set. Cairn Liath is an Iron Age broch that sits proudly on a rocky knoll and commands views over a long stretch of coastline. Broch’s are substantial stone towers or roundhouses only found in the far north of Scotland. They were constructed and used between 600 BC and 100 AD. This broch has a circular interior 10.2m in diameter and substantial walls over 5m thick; there was one entrance passage to the building. The walls survive to 3.66m high, but originally the building would have stood to a considerably height and had higher floors. A staircase to higher levels was built into the wall. The third Duke of Sutherland ‘cleared’ this broch in 1868 and some of his finds from his antiquarian excavations are preserved in the National Museum of Scotland. Some elements are suggestive of a Mediaeval cog, especially hull dimensions, keel design and clinker build. Another comparison would be a mid-to-late-18th-century or early 19th-century merchant, or naval, brig. Brigs were two-masted, square-rigged ships which normally had a spanker sail set on the lower mainmast. The foremast was the shorter of the two masts. They were used as both naval and merchant vessels. If this ship is based on a naval vessel it would be classed as a sixth-rate (having 20-28 guns on a single deck) as there are 22 gun-ports.
