There is no complete dodo skeleton left, nevertheless the NHM Vienna owns one of the most complete skeletons. Dodos lived exclusively on the islands of Mauritius and Reunion. The last dodo probably went extinct about 1690. The dodo is Number 80 of the NHM Top 100 and can be found in Hall 31 of the NHM Vienna. Photogrammetry Scan of an original specimen from Fossilogic (casting rights holder), in Pleasant Grove Utah. Scanned using a Nikon D850 with a 35mm prime and an Xrite color chart. Images were processed using Adobe Lightroom and calibrated to the color chart in ADOBE RGB colorspace. Scan was completed in Epic Games Reality Capture. Scan geometry was processed in Autodesk 3ds Max using the retopology modifier to get to an accurate polycount to be subdivided to as close to 100millon polys as possible. Max was also used to unwrap into UVW layouts. The resulting retopoed and UVw’d geo was re-imported into reality capture and base color info was reprojected. The resulting geometry was imported into Maxon Zbrush for clean-up and minor restoration. Mesh Maps were baked in Marmoset Toolbag 4. In 2013 I made an anatomical 3d model of Rattus norvegicus, the brown rat, commonly used as lab animal. The model is still one of the most complete anatomical rat models known, but in the 7 years after finishing this model I became a lot better in what I do. To show you how much, I redid the C1, the atlas, the first vertebra of the spine. I annotated the current C1, because a vertebra is much more than just part of the spine, it has a lot of distinct features of its own. If you want to see the annotations, just click “show annotations” at the bottom of the model window. I want to redo the complete model and put it in a dedicated website so, that everybody can learn the gross anatomy of Rattus norvegicus in a way that doesn’t need actual specimens. These birds were bagged by Crown Prince Rudolf on the 22nd of January 1889, only nine days before he committed suicide in Mayerling, Austria. The nest of the white-tailed eagles called eyrie can be as tall as four meters and is often used for many years. The white-tailed eagle pair with a fledgling at the center is Number 74 of the NHM Top 100 and can be found in Hall 29 of the NHM Vienna. This is the fossilised claw of a carnivorous (meat-eating) dinosaur. It was found at Cape Otway, Victoria in 2014 by John Wilkins during fieldwork by a Museum Victoria-led team of researchers and volunteers. This claw is very similar to the claw of Australovenator wintonensis, a theropod dinosaur found in Queensland and described in 2009. We think that this claw specimen is from a dinosaur closely related to Australovenator, if not from the same species. Both Victorian and Queensland dinosaurs would have been alive about 100 million years ago during the Cretaceous period. The Museum Victoria claw is obviously from a carnivore, being rather sharp. In life it would have been even longer and sharper as the bone would have been covered by a horny sheath. This cast of a Megalonyx claw was 3-D scanned with a Go!Scan50 scanner in December 2018 at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia. The original giant ground sloth (Megalonyx jeffersonii) claw was sent to Thomas Jefferson in the late 1700s from a cave in what is now West Virginia.Repository specimen number ANSP 12507. It was recovered from Big Bone Lick, Kentucky by William Clark in 1807 for Thomas Jefferson. Courtesy of the Academy of Natural Sciences. A Virginia Commonwealth University Seed Grant supported the research trip that made this scanning effort possible. 3D scan of a Eastern moa (Emeus crassus) skeleton from the Pleistocene. Moas are extinct birds that lived on New Zealand. This skeleton was gifted to the museum by Dr. Julius Ritter von Haast. This specific skeleton is housed backstage, but complete skeletons of both a giant moa (Dinornis maximus) and another Eastern moa are number 77 of the NHM Top 100 and can be found in Hall 30 of the NHM Vienna. This turtle was caught in 1832 on the banks of the Rio Solimões during an Austrian expedition in Brazil. It came to the NHM Vienna in 1834 and is one of a few found specimens of this rare species. Arrau turtles live in the wetland areas of South America and are among the largest freshwater turtles in the world. The Arrau turtle is Number 73 of the NHM Top 100 and can be found in Hall 28 of the NHM Vienna.
