These birds were bagged by Crown Prince Rudolf on the 22nd of January 1889, only nine days before he committed suicide in Mayerling, Austria. The nest of the white-tailed eagles called eyrie can be as tall as four meters and is often used for many years. To solve this problem, we applied a complex solution - a combination of laser scanning and photogrammetric imaging. The work process is divided into 2 stages. • The first stage involved laser scanning with panoramic photography and taking photos of the object from the UAV. It took 16 scanning stations and 350 photos to create an informative cloud of facade points. Using the RTC360 laser scanner and the Phantom Advanced UAV, this stage was completed in 4 hours. • The second step was implemented by using Leica Cyclone and Capturing Reality software, which consisted of linking scan data in the local coordinate system. The next item was an automatic combination of an aligned cloud of dots and photos. This cast of a Megalonyx claw was 3-D scanned with a Go!Scan50 scanner in December 2018 at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia. The original giant ground sloth (Megalonyx jeffersonii) claw was sent to Thomas Jefferson in the late 1700s from a cave in what is now West Virginia.Repository specimen number ANSP 12507. It was recovered from Big Bone Lick, Kentucky by William Clark in 1807 for Thomas Jefferson. Courtesy of the Academy of Natural Sciences. A Virginia Commonwealth University Seed Grant supported the research trip that made this scanning effort possible. Acquired by D’Arcy Thompson in Kamchatka, Siberia, during his Bering Sea expeditions of 1896-7. Scanned with an Artec Eva surface scanner. This ornately carved sandstone monument, said to weigh 20 tons and standing 2 meters high, is at the Archaeological Park and Ruins of Quiriguá, an inscribed UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Department of Izabal, Guatemala. The piece was 3D laser scanned in 2019 during our extensive documentation survey at the site by our USF Libraries DHHC team. We utilized structured light scanners at various sub-millimetric resolutions on this monument. Besides the rich iconography carved on this ceremonial throne, the text in the cartouches describe the founding of the Quiriguá dynasty (see also Matthew Looper’s Quirigua: A Guide to an Ancient Maya City, 2007 for discussion and additional references). I do a lot of dingy, banged up tech objects, but this time, I wanted to dive in hard with the super sleek stormtrooper helmet style white plastic.
