Cairn Liath is an Iron Age broch that sits proudly on a rocky knoll and commands views over a long stretch of coastline. Broch’s are substantial stone towers or roundhouses only found in the far north of Scotland. They were constructed and used between 600 BC and 100 AD. This broch has a circular interior 10.2m in diameter and substantial walls over 5m thick; there was one entrance passage to the building. The walls survive to 3.66m high, but originally the building would have stood to a considerably height and had higher floors. A staircase to higher levels was built into the wall. The third Duke of Sutherland ‘cleared’ this broch in 1868 and some of his finds from his antiquarian excavations are preserved in the National Museum of Scotland. Object curated by the The Bishop Museum of Science and Nature (formerly the South Florida Museum), Bradenton, FL. This object (#A143), is from the Tallant collections received in c. 1940. This piece was noted by archaeologist John Mann Goggin as possibly being related to the Glades III Period in Florida prehistory (AD 1200-1763). Goggin only saw images and a drawing of the piece, and its true provenance and dating remain unknown. The small, 10.5 cm high piece appears to be that of an anthropomorphic owl. A simulated Iron Age roundhouse at the Ryedale Folk Museum, North Yorkshire. Roundhouses are relatively common in the British Bronze and Iron Ages, seemingly representing a standard type of housing in most areas. The style continued to be used even into the sub-Roman period in some cases. This reconstruction is based on an example excavated at nearby Pickering Quarry. The common features of a roundhouse are the circle of timber posts joined by wattle-and-daub panels, and a roughly 45 degree pitched thatch roof. Here an impressive ‘porch’ feature has been interpreted, most likely used as a windbreak of sorts. 45 degrees was found by experimental archaeologists to be the most efficient design, and surprisingly strong. A hearth burns constantly in the centre, but there is no chimney as an updraft will allow sparks to start a fire, and besides the smoke discourages creatures from eating the thatch. Jabal Tuwaiq (Arabic: جَبَل طُوَيْق, Tuwaiq Mountain) is a narrow escarpment that cuts through the plateau of Najd in central Arabia, running approximately 800 km (500 mi) from the southern border of Al-Qasim in the north, to the northern edge of the Empty Quarter desert near Wadi ad-Dawasir in the south. It is 600 m (2,000 ft) high and also has a Middle Jurassic stratigraphic section. The eastern side slopes downwards gradually, while the western side ends in an abrupt manner. The escarpment can be thought of as a narrow plateau, though the locals refer to it as a jebel (“mount”). Vincent Van Gogh, based on a self-portrait, and textured using his painting technique. This is my first ‘organic’ ever so it was a steep learning curve, currently I’ve been using Blender for 4 months and it’s my first time with 3D software. I’ve purposefully made one ear uneven as Vincent had cut off his ear with a razor blade towards the end of his life. I found a doctor’s note which details how his ear looked so it’s as accurate as I can get it. It’s slightly surreal to experience this portrait in 3D and get a real life-like sense of the man beyond just a single pose.
