Fossil containing two adult Taxocrinus Meeki, one young Taxocrinus Meeki, two Pentrimites stems and one Platyceras. Lower Carboniferous. Crawfordsville, Indiana. Taxocrinus is a crinoid and Pentrimites is a Blastoid; both of the phylum Echinodermata. Platyceras is a Gastropod; phylum Mollusca. This specimen is a good illustration of Platyceras being commensal on Taxocrinus. Bungart Date Collected: 23 Jun, 1938 358 million years ago, a shallow sea teeming with marine life covered Northeast Ohio. Dunkleosteus terrelli, the largest predator and one of the fiercest creatures alive in the Devonian “Age of Fishes,” ruled the waters. Up to 20 feet in length and weighing more than 1 ton, this fish was capable of chopping prehistoric sharks into chum! Dunkleosteus had a massive skull made of thick, bony plates, and 2 sets of fang-like protrusions near the front of powerful, self-sharpening jawbones. Messing around with refractive materials! The Mosquito scan (415k tris) is from Geoffrey Marchal. Modeling: The scan was first remeshed with mmgs and baked to a lighter version (11k tris). The amber fragment was roughly sculpted in blender (“I have no clue what I’m doing” style), keeping the main face flat (clay strips + flatten brushes). The small fragments inside the amber were done by splitting all the main fragment edges and applying the “shrink/fatten” tool, followed by a random Displace modifier. Exterior fragments were then removed with a boolean modifier.
