Olive Jar Rim #BAH1993-1474. Spanish colonial era ships frequently carried amphora-like earthenware jugs called “olive jars” (botijas in Spanish) to hold wine, oil, & vinegar. These egg-shaped jars were roughly 50 centimeters tall by 30-40 cm in diameter. The St. Johns Wreck, believed to be that of the 1564 galleon Santa Clara, carried at least 130 olive jars; most broke when the ship wrecked – we only know the number by tallying the surviving rims. This rim has an outside diameter of 9.2 cm, and stands 4 cm tall. The BRDM-2 has a crew of four: a driver, a co-driver, a commander, and a gunner. The BRDM-2 entered service with the Soviet Army in 1962. It was first publicly shown in 1966. It replaced the BRDM-1 in the Soviet and Warsaw Pact armies. Production started in 1962 and went on until 1989, with 7,200 vehicles produced. Messing around with refractive materials! The Mosquito scan (415k tris) is from Geoffrey Marchal. Modeling: The scan was first remeshed with mmgs and baked to a lighter version (11k tris). The amber fragment was roughly sculpted in blender (“I have no clue what I’m doing” style), keeping the main face flat (clay strips + flatten brushes). The small fragments inside the amber were done by splitting all the main fragment edges and applying the “shrink/fatten” tool, followed by a random Displace modifier. Exterior fragments were then removed with a boolean modifier.
