Unfortunately, the sun wasn’t being particularly helpful for this scan as it kept popping out from behind the clouds for some of the shots. Small environment model based on a wonderful illustration by Marcel Hampel (https://bit.ly/2ATepdS). With this study I had one major goal - examine how base color works with light while trying to stay to the color scheme of the original illustration as close as possible. In order to do this I found myself referring to the birch a lot - its white color helped me figure out light and shadow hue and value relation between all the elements of the illustration. I didn’t use textures (except for the alpha cards for the grass and moss) so I could change colors quickly. I also learned some new tricks, like using Data Transfer modifier in Blender in order to adjust normals of the moss grass to the moss itself so it would blend perfectly (more obvious in the Matcap view). In order for both sides to look good, I duplicated the mesh and flipped normals, while making them both single sided. I didn’t do it for the grass because I thought it looked better with default normals in this case. 3D Model is ready to download for free, this model contains 36877 polygons.

Princess Sputnik is inspired upon Mark Ryden’s enchanting painting of a little space girl. It is my favourite of his collection “The Meat Show” http://www.markryden.com/paintings/meat/ Recently I had the unique chance of seeing some of Ryden’s best work at an exhibit near me, and meeting the artist himself! All of his work is really special and a very encouraging opportunity to have fun adapting his work to 3D. This little model was made using Blender and Photoshop. The sci-fi space suit was the coolest part to do, I especially love how all the shapes combine together. The baby was rigged then posed last to fit the tummy in its fetal position. I kept the textures high quality 4096, drew out some of the shadows staying true to the paintings style and colours. Bronze statue located next to the City Park (Stadspark) of Antwerp (Belgium). The statue was cast in Paris by F. Barbedienne, from an original stone sculpture by Marcel Bourbier. The piece was part of the French pavillion during the World Fair of 1930 in Antwerp, and was later gifted to the city of Antwerp by the city of Paris. The original stone sculpture has since disappeared (a smaller bronze cast is on display in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Nîmes / EDIT: apparently the original is now at Hearst Castle in California!). This beautiful, innocent scene foreshadows a tragic ending; the girl depicted in the sculpture, Marcelle Battu, was later accused of collabortion with the German occupiers and sentenced to death by the Military Court of Nîmes.
