Galleys were used in Russia from Peter the Great onwards. The heritage of all galleys, Russian and Swedish, can be found on the Mediterranean. By 1790 this ship type was becoming obsolete. While it was large, the galley had difficulty navigating the open seas and could only carry a few guns in the bow and stern. It was essentially a carry-over from an earlier era of close combat on the seas. Some 80+ of these galleys were built in the 18th century in Russia. But after this war they were increasingly supplanted by smaller gun sloops of the Swedish type.

The Penteconter - was an ancient Greek galley in use since the archaic period. The penteconters emerged in an era when there was no distinction between merchant and war ships. They were versatile, long-range ships used for sea trade, piracy and warfare, capable of transporting freight or troops. Kharkovchanka , code name: Manufacture 404S, is a model of Antarctic off-road vehicle. Based on the AT-T tractor platform (itself based on the T-54 tank). In December 1959 two of them (“21” and “23”) were delivered to Antarctica and reached the South Pole. The massive off-road snow vehicle had a total of a small galley, toilet, oven, and eight beds. Three Kharkovchankas were built in 1958, and shipped to Antarctica. They traversed from the ocean coast to the existing Soviet Vostok Station in February 1959. Two of these, and a third AT-T tractor, left Vostok station for the geographic South Pole in early December 1959, arriving at the pole on 26 December 1959, and surprising the US crew that had been airlifted into the Amundsen–Scott Station the previous summer. In the 1950s, LeTourneau Inc. developed several overland trains, essentially oversized semi-trailer trucks that could travel over almost any terrain. Their intention was to be able to handle logistics needs without being dependent on local road or rail systems, allowing them to operate in back-country areas. The US Army had three experimental units built, the largest reaching almost 600 feet (183 m) long, which holds the record for the longest off-road vehicle. The Mark II had a much larger six-wheeled cab that was over 30 feet (9.1 m). The turbine engine was much smaller than the diesel it replaced, allowing the interior to support a crew of six with sleeping quarters, toilets and a galley. It was even equipped with a radar. An additional two power cars and ten cargo cars were built for testing.
