In Hunnic and Turkic culture, the left or East is considered the superior cardinal direction; hence, a prince associated with the East would often be designated as heir to the khanate. As such, the horse, symbolizing the nomad, is placed on the East in contrast to the dragon that represents the Han, or non-bow wielding peoples. Nonetheless, both the horse and the dragon are shown to be powerless against the wolves that represent Hunnic superiority. Stylistically, the buckles emulate the classic look of Xiongnu and Hunnic jewelry: gold, granulated, with carnelians/agate stones, and cloud and predatory based motiffs.
