The model is an artist’s view of the atmosphere of WASP-76b, an ultrahot giant extrasolar planet about twice the size of Jupiter which orbits very close to its star, WASP-76 (a class F7 star), at a distance which is almost double the size of the Sun. As in the case of our moon, WASP-76b always shows the same face to its star because it rotates exactly once every time it orbits around its star (its rate of spin is synchronized with its rate of revolution). Scientists recently discovered that the face of the planet facing the star reaches temperatures so high that the iron is vaporized. As a result, when iron vapor is transported to the cooler side of the planet due to strong winds, it condenses in the atmosphere producing liquid iron rain. The scene describes this new and unexpected phenomenon.

The birth of a star is a complex process which takes place in molecular clouds of the interstellar medium. The clouds (or diffuse nebulae) consist in a mixture of dust, hydrogen, helium and other ionized gases. The interstellar material is enriched by heavy elements previously forged in the interior of stars and ejected at the end of their lives in the form of dense winds and supernova explosions. Dense regions within the clouds collapse and form new stars. For this reason, these spectacular nebulae are often referred as stellar nurseries or star-forming regions. The model represents a sunset over the Tatooine desert. Tatooine is a fictional planet that appears in the Star Wars saga. The planet is a vast desolate desert and orbits a close binary system consisting of a pair of G-type stars. At the time Tatooine was created by George Lucas, no extrasolar planets had yet been discovered. Today, we know the existence, in our galaxy, of thousands of stars with planets in orbit around them. Some of these are circumbinary planets, i.e. planets that orbit two stars instead of one … like Tatooine. An example is HD 202206, in which a Jupiter-size planet orbits a system consisting of a Sun-like star and a brown dwarf. Currently none of the known circumbinary planets are terrestrial planets located in the habitable zone. However, we cannot exclude the existence of circumbinary planets similar to Tatooine.

Betelgeuse is a red supergiant that shines in one of the “shoulders” of the constellation Orion. It is one of the brightest stars in the night sky, located about 640 light-years from us. As shown in this artist’s impression, the ambient environment around Betelgeuse is highly inhomogeneous due material irregularly blown away by the star. In fact, Betelgeuse is in a phase characterized by continuous expansion, and chaotic mass loss from outer layers of its atmosphere. The star is burning heavier and heavier elements in its core following its path to inevitably become a supernova. We don’t know when Betelgeuse will explode. It can be on any random day between now and the next ~100,000 years, very soon in astronomical timescales. When this will happen, the supernova will be the brightest object visible in the night sky for months.
