Caracalla was Roman emperor from 198 to 217 CE. After the death of their father, Septimius Severus, Caracalla briefly ruled with his brother, Geta, before having him assassinated by the Praetorian Guard in 211 CE. Caracalla is often portrayed as a cruel and bloodthirsty tyrant by ancient sources. Caracalla lends his name to the monumental “Baths of Caracalla" in Rome, begun in 211, though it was most likely his father, Septimius Severus, who planned and initiated the project.
