Here’s my latest project, a Smith & Wesson 66-8 .357 Revolver. This has a good amount of parts to it, so to have everything bake out right I had to bake by mesh name. I learned two things - that baking by mesh name is case sensitive, and trying to use an .fbx before it’s fully exported just doesn’t work. It corrupts your exported file. Just so you know. With the textures, I used a combination of materials and masks to mimic dirt, grime, and soot from repeated use. I had to make about 7 alphas for all the height details. I had to adjust some materials so it’d read better as metal instead of stone, as well as adjusting the damage information and swapping out some normals that I wasn’t satisfied with. Time to call this model finished for now. I used the Warhammer 40k models Witchfate Tor and Dreadstone Blight as my main references for the design of the tower. I started this model in Maya, blocking in all the shapes. Then I moved to ZBrush and sculpted in detail. In hindsight, I wish I had made this a more modular blockout because I ran out of time sculpting each individual piece. After I had sculpted enough to finish baking my Game Res mesh I moved to texturing in Substance Painter. It took a bit of time to get my UV’s laid out well enough to have the resolution I wanted, and I ended up going from 1 texture set to 2 in order to achieve the level of detail I wanted. I found a doctor’s note which details how his ear looked so it’s as accurate as I can get it. It’s slightly surreal to experience this portrait in 3D and get a real life-like sense of the man beyond just a single pose. Cooperation with our friends at G-3D-PrintThe front cover of the jetski was scanned using Artec Leo in 15 minutes (including chalc sraying, markers, etc.) and the post-process workflow took about 60 minutes in Artec Studio. The jetski belongs to the world champion György Kasza and his team. The purpose of the scan is to make a perfect fit bespoke fabricated composite cover, therefore some reverse engineering was necessary to get a native CAD data (step) to be able to machine the mold for the composite. For this, weve sed Quicksurface’s Autosurface option to get the nurbs surface based on the HQ mesh.
