For this school assignment, the theme was “pirate ship”; the teacher wanted us to learn how to use 2 materials for 1 object. As I am a fan of more organic designs and mythology in general, I went with a stylized viking boat. For the shapes and the style, I was inspired by a game franchise that is dear to me: The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. As for the textures, I tried to replicate a hand-painting feeling using masks and filters within Substance Painter. This project was suprisingly very fun to do! What happened to the viking?
A little 3D story made for the WeeklyCGChallenge #102 “Viking Age”. I’m really happy with how this turned out.
Almost everything was done with Blender, but I also used PixPlant to get the map textures. It’s a great tool, easy to use, and easy to get great results for the Specular material workflow!

The Skuldelev ships are a group of five well preserved 11th century ships from the Viking period, found in the Roskilde Fjord in Denmark near the town of Skuldelev. Skuldelev 2 was a large ocean going longship, a war vessel probably known as a Skeid - the type of vessel also known in the sagas as “dragon ships”. From analyzing the wood of the ship archaeologists were able to determine the ship had been built in Ireland around the 1040’s CE, the furthest away of all the Skuldelev ships. This digital recreation is based on the ‘The Sea Stallion from Glendalough’, a full scale reconstruction made by the Roskilde Viking Ship Museum.
