Some people in Roman Staines did rather well out of selling provisions to passing travellers; their houses had tiled roofs, Opus Signinum (concrete) floors, hypocaust flue tiles (under floor heating), window glass and painted walls. This is one of many fragments of painted wall plaster found in Staines. If you look carefully you can see a groove on the back where the slaked lime/sand/aggregate plaster was attached to the wooden ‘wattle’ frame of the wall, and a thin fine smooth layer of crushed marble which is applied to the outer surface to provide a painting surface. Analysis of samples from Staines by the University of Leicester showed our painted plaster to be painted ‘buon fresco’, or when the plaster was still wet, meaning plastering and painting were completed in panels of one days work before the plaster dried. Equipment used: Canon 600D (used around 175 photos in a phototent+turntable setup with continuous dual softbox lighting). Software used: Agisoft Photoscan, RAW photo editor, Blender,Instant Meshes and Substance Painter. Mesh: The Original Scan had around 22M faces/triangles and was decimated to around 4.5M before baking a normal map from it. The Lowpoly has 20K triangles. Reconstruction of a Roman room in Londinium (Roman London), 1st-2nd century AD. The wall decoration was reconstructed starting from fragments of painted plaster found in Bishopsgate ca.1850, now at the British Museum. The lost parts of the walls were recreated using examples from Verulamium (St Albans) and Colchester. The mosaic selected for this reconstruction was found in Silchester. The krater (vase used to mix wine) at its centre shares the Bacchic theme of the wall paintings, which depict satyrs holding grapes and a thyrsus. All the objects in the room are based on Roman originals. The table in this reconstruction was found in Herculaneum, where it was carbonised during the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius (https://bit.ly/2svzzqD ). The lucernae (oil lamps) and wares were reconstructed using Roman artefacts on exhibition at the British Museum, room G49. This is all that remains of SS Rifle, one of the earliest surviving examples of a small pre-fabricated screw steamer in the British Isles. Rifle was purchased by the Locheil Estate in the 1860s for use on Loch Arkaig, ferrying goods, passengers and mail between the isolated dwellings around the loch. As well as being a practical vessel, Rifle was also used for pleasure, often carrying shooting parties. The boat was laid-up in the 1930s, and whilst being scrapped, sank and lay buried until removed by the army after becoming a hazard to wartime vessels working from the pier. Rifle was blasted away from the pier, losing the bow in the process. Despite being submerged for over half a century, it was raised in 1990. Although in a very fragile condition, Rifle’s propeller is a well-preserved example of an early design. The model was created as a part of ‘Scanning The Horizon’ 3D digitisation project.
