I really wanted to make a scifi character in his combat suit. I was inspired by Star Citizen, but Halo’s designs are really the best ones for this. For the process, at first I made the lowpoly model in Maya, then I went to Zbrush to subdivide it and put all the details needed with my own alphas. I baked the highpoly model in susbtance painter, and then I tried to make several smart materials to texture the whole character. I also did 2 different camos, because I needed a character that could fit in my upcoming space station project. I also rigged my character with my own auto-rig, therefore I was able to put it in several poses. Did a scan of one of our company shirts for a quick project. This is the first time I’ve combined two sides of a soft-body scan - cloth tends to be somewhat floppy. To flip the shirt without messing up the fold pattern, I made a sort of cardboard sandwich I could press together. I also overexposed the shots to improve the scan. The cleanup wasn’t too bad. Even after deleting points from the platforms from the dense cloud they still made their way into the mesh a little. Ended up taking those out in Max, then smoothing things over in ZBrush. I also used ZBrush for the decimation and unwrap, and was really happy about the results. I like Max’s peel feature, but UV Master in ZBrush goes so much faster and gets rid of all the overlaps even if the result is bent a little. I also still need to find a faster way to patch up seams. There was one towards the “south” side of the shirt that I had to a 2nd channel unwrap -> bake -> photoshop -> bake to ch1 -> mask into texture approach. Conservation with the overall tricount, texture space and alpha usage in the project was important to make sure the model could load well in the application, the texture for the character was 4k for this render however this was reduced to 2k in the application and the overall tricount came in at around 70k for the whole project. It’s not great, it’s not that bad either… This jacket is a replica of the black paneled uniform worn by military members of the Atlantis expedition in the Sci-Fi show Stargate Atlantis, and this specific version, made of ripstop fabric, is worn by John Sheppard during seasons 2 and 3 of the show.
