Burj Khalifa (Khalifa Tower) is a skyscraper in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Known as the Burj Dubai prior to its inauguration the tower was renamed when Sheikh Khalifa, the ruler of the United Arab Emirates, granted monetary aid and funding when the original developers experienced financial problems. With 163 floors and a total height of 829.8m the Burj Khalifa has been the tallest structure and building in the world since its topping out in 2009, supplanting Taipei 101, the previous holder of that status. The building was design, by a team led by Adrian Smith of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, is derived from Islamic architecture. As the tower rises from the flat desert base, there are 27 setbacks in a spiral pattern, decreasing the cross section of the tower as it rises and creating convenient outdoor terraces. This is a creation that I originally built in “Stormworks: Build and Rescue” and modified using the mystical powers of Blender. Although I tried my best to clean it up, the nature of exporting models from Stormworks means that it’s still a bit rough in some areas. My model attempts to represent the Glen Sannox as she would’ve appeared in her original 1957 configuration, although I took some artistic liberty and added some extra rust on the hull (because it looks cool?). I originally completed this creation in July of 2020, but I realized that my model wasn’t very accurate when compared to the real ship. With this updated version, I’ve almost completely rebuilt my model to be as accurate to the real thing as possible. I’m proud to finally present a project I’ve been working on since 2015: A diorama scene depicting the Battle of Hoth from “Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back”. My ultimate goal was to present drama and emotion through percieved detail while limiting my polycount as much as possible; Putting weight and motion into each hand-posed character to mimic the feeling one might get looking at a table with wargaming miniatures. The concept was partially inspired by the Halo 3 “Believe” ad series. Workflow: No external textures were used, only vertex color painting and some baking for PBR compatability and reduced file size. Done 100% in Blender3D. What I Learned in the Process: Getting to extensively use vertex painting was one of the most fun aspects of this project. I also gained a lot of experience in basic character modelling, and until now, I had never used Blender’s rigging system. Hello people, I have built a battleship/carrier here that comes from my own imagination but also borrows ideas from ships from the Stargate universe. It is completely rigged.\n\nIt has 8 heavy cannons and 14 medium cannons (all medium cannons have a tracker for easier use of the rig, as well as a collection tracker for 5 cannons on each site so that they can be used synchronously to track a target), plus a heavy rocket launcher.\n\nIt has 4 main engines for sub-light speeds. in the lower middle an auxiliary engine. The bridge is in the upper rear part. Shortly behind it is the reactor and next to it the 8 shield generators. The hyperdrive is connected directly to the reactor. A personal project I started in September that got pushed back due to university work. After finishing the game I knew I had to make something for my portfolio to show praise as I am one of the few people with the controversial opinion that the game is a masterpiece, ultimately becoming my favourite game I’ve ever played. I’m a huge fan of Joel and Ellie and I was very invested in the continuation of their story. I chose to model the guitar that Joel gives to Ellie as I felt that it was a physical embodiment of their relationship which is my favorite thing about the games. It’s also different to a lot of my other portfolio pieces as I tend to model weapons. I found this piece quite challenging as the sunburst pattern on the body of the guitar took some time to get right as I had not done too much hand painted texturing within Substance Painter but I am very happy with the results.
