From the 18th Dynasty onwards, mudbrick pyramids were used to mark the tombs of private individuals. These small structures were topped by a stone pyramidion. Many such pyramidia have survived, and most of them were found in Thebes (at Deir el-Medina) and Saqqara (the burial ground of the city of Memphis). They are typically decorated with solar motifs. On the front of this particular example, the deceased Ptahemwia is depicted standing in adoration. The hieroglyphic text is dedicated to Re-Horakhty and Osiris. Above the deceased, we see the jackal god Anubis. The wife of the deceased and their three children are shown standing in adoration on the right side, with two other women in the back. The left side depicts the gods Re-Horakhty and Osiris. The wall decoration was reconstructed starting from fragments of painted plaster found in Bishopsgate ca.1850, now at the British Museum. The lost parts of the walls were recreated using examples from Verulamium (St Albans) and Colchester. The mosaic selected for this reconstruction was found in Silchester. The krater (vase used to mix wine) at its centre shares the Bacchic theme of the wall paintings, which depict satyrs holding grapes and a thyrsus. All the objects in the room are based on Roman originals. The table in this reconstruction was found in Herculaneum, where it was carbonised during the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius (https://bit.ly/2svzzqD ). The lucernae (oil lamps) and wares were reconstructed using Roman artefacts on exhibition at the British Museum, room G49. The reconstruction is based primarily on the excavation report by Peter Marsden published by English Heritage, “Ships of the Port of London – First to eleventh Centuries AD”. It contained detailed drawings of the remains and reconstruction drawings. Where no evidence remained, such as for the sails and the rear of the ship, Roman period iconography and other Roman period shipwrecks from northern Europe were used as inspiration. The sail plan is based of the Torlonia relief, and the nearly intact mast of a Roman period ship found in Bruges, Belgium. Taharqa Gate Conservation The Taharqa Gate is situated in what would have been the northern mudbrick enclosure wall of the Small Amun Temple at Medinet Habu. In the aftermath of the destruction of the Temple Area and walls of Ramses III at Medinet Habu, the Ethiopian Kings of the 25th dynasty undertook reconstruction efforts, rebuilding a mudbrick wall encircling the small temple upon the foundations of a wall of the same dimensions erected by Hatshepsut. With these massive mudbrick enclosure walls all but weathered away, the gate now appears as a free standing structure. However, the lack of surrounding mudbrick structural support it had when built, combined with 2000 years of erosion have left the gate in need of urgent attention. Our scanning specialist needed 15 minutes to capture the beetle in three different positions: the first two in HD mode for acquiring texture information, and one more, with some self-evaporating scan covering the beetle, for bringing geometry reconstruction to perfection. Two sets of photographs were taken right after scanning the first two times, for further registration and photogrammetry in Artec Studio. The third scan helped create the mesh, onto which the photo texture was projected, using Artec Studio’s killer texturing algorithm. Go ahead and rotate the model to enjoy the vibrant turquoise, blue, and black, as well as every intricate body part of the beetle – you might start to wonder if it’s you or the beetle moving its claws, wings, and antennae.
