This time I wanted to make something from an actual concept instead of a real object. I took a lot of inspiration from the modeling and texturing techniques of games like Fortnite, Overwatch and other stylized game. I’d say stylized is not my strength, but I wanted to try it! I also managed to rig it and try animating for the first time to give it some spice! I’m very happy with how it came out at the end, knowing I can constantly improve on essential aspects such as texturing and modeling. I want to take the time to thank Leonardo Raponi, Claudio Tumiati, Andrea Orioli, Ilaria Troullier, Alberto Casu, Marco Vergantini and everyone in the “TheScostumati” Discord server who have helped me with various aspects during the making of this project such as modeling, texturing, rigging and animation. Greek Trireme A Trireme is an ancient warship used by Phoenicians, ancient Greeks and Romans. The trireme has three rows of oars and a bronze ram used to damage other ships in naval battles. This model is mainly based on the Olympias, a reconstruction made in the 80’s. This kind of boat was seen in video games like Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and numerous peplum movies. I was excited to discover in my research on the Temple of Zeus at Olympia (ca. 460 BCE) that the University of Heidelberg had made available online the published findings of the German excavations that began in 1875 (https://goo.gl/eyPAo9). In Volume 3, I found a photograph of the reconstructed east pediment sculptures (https://goo.gl/qLsfp3), which inspired me to paint it (since Greek statues were polychromed) and create a displacement map. “Pausanias…identifies the subject of the East Pediment as the chariot race between Oenomaos, King of Pisa, and Pelops, a suitor of Oenomaos’ daughter Hippodameia. He adds that the race has not yet begun. The quietness of the scene suggests that the specific event is the taking of the oath by the contestants before the race, watched over by Zeus…in the center of the pediment.” The remains are housed in the Archaeological Museum of Olympia.
