Reconstruction of a Roman room in Londinium (Roman London), 1st-2nd century AD. The wall decoration was reconstructed starting from fragments of painted plaster found in Bishopsgate ca.1850, now at the British Museum. The lost parts of the walls were recreated using examples from Verulamium (St Albans) and Colchester. The mosaic selected for this reconstruction was found in Silchester. The krater (vase used to mix wine) at its centre shares the Bacchic theme of the wall paintings, which depict satyrs holding grapes and a thyrsus. All the objects in the room are based on Roman originals. The table in this reconstruction was found in Herculaneum, where it was carbonised during the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius (https://bit.ly/2svzzqD ). The lucernae (oil lamps) and wares were reconstructed using Roman artefacts on exhibition at the British Museum, room G49. This exquisite drinking cup for atol in the collection of the Snite Museum of Art at the University of Notre Dame (cat. # 1982.053) is adorned along the rim with jaguar prints on the inside and hieroglyphs on the outside. The previously unpublished inscription is one of the finest examples of seventh-century Maya caligraphy and contains rare variants of number 9 and TZ’AK. There are no personal names or place names. The text only states that the cup belonged to “the artisan of the eternal lord”. The orthography of the inscription is rather unusual: the scribe apparently tried to arrange the text so that it would consist of 20 characters in 11 segments (blocks) with an extra visual emphasis on the word “eternal (bolon tz’akbuul)”. A 14th century farmer using a heavy plough pulled by oxen. I was approached by BuildersBrew to create a small diorama of a Medieval Farmer ploughing the fields, this was based off of some references provided and is to be used within the immersive mobile app for The Chester House Estate. Conservation with the overall tricount, texture space and alpha usage in the project was important to make sure the model could load well in the application, the texture for the character was 4k for this render however this was reduced to 2k in the application and the overall tricount came in at around 70k for the whole project. The complex was destroyed in the middle of the 4th Century probably by the Alemanni. Today, the wine press and parts of the mansion are covered by protective shelters. During the construction of a new riverside wall in 1962 in London, the remains of an interesting ship were found. Dating evidence from the timbers and a coin found in the mast step placed the ship as likely being built, and sunk, during the Roman period, specifically in the 2nd Century CE. However, the ship was constructed in the Celtic tradition. The reconstruction is based primarily on the excavation report by Peter Marsden published by English Heritage, “Ships of the Port of London – First to eleventh Centuries AD”. It contained detailed drawings of the remains and reconstruction drawings. Where no evidence remained, such as for the sails and the rear of the ship, Roman period iconography and other Roman period shipwrecks from northern Europe were used as inspiration. The sail plan is based of the Torlonia relief, and the nearly intact mast of a Roman period ship found in Bruges, Belgium. On January 18th 1935, Clark Hopkins, the field director at Dura-Europos, found three painted shields stacked on top of each other during an excavation. The shields, which date back to shortly before AD 256 and which were abandoned when Dura-Europos was sacked by the Sassanians, were in good condition with much of the painting still visible. The ancient shield has been beautifully restored in digital 3D using available data from the Yale University Art Gallery and Herbert J. Gute’s watercolor painting, “Wooden Shield Painted with Scenes from the Trojan War”. The Delphic maxims are a set of maxims inscribed on the Temple of Apollo at Delphi. Originally, they were said to have been given by the Greek god Apollo’s Oracle at Delphi, Pythia, and therefore were attributed to Apollo. The 3rd century doxographer Diogenes Laertius attributed them to the Seven Sages of Greece as did the 5th century scholar Stobaeus. Contemporary scholars, however, hold that their original authorship is uncertain and that ‘most likely they were popular proverbs, which tended later to be attributed to particular sages.’ Roman educator Quintilian argued that students should copy those aphorisms often to improve their moral core. Perhaps the most famous of these maxims is ‘Γνῶθι σεαυτόν’ - ‘Know thyself,’ which was the first of three maxims carved above the entrance to the Temple of Apollo at Delphi.
