This pipe was heavily damaged and missing large chunks in the bowl. Restoring these missing pieces, and reducing the amount of wear on the pipe brought back more color and smoother features. Smoking was much more taboo back in the mid 1800s, even among soldiers. The flower as a symbol of eternity and rebirth indicates that the man had died by the time that his portrait was made. Who the depicted person is remains unknown. Perhaps he was a philhellene ruler or the descendant of a royal family who had more of a spiritual than political connection to Athens. Some researchers identify him with Sauromates II, king of the Cimmerian Bosporus, others with Rhoemetalkes whereas there are scholars who think it is Herodes Atticus or the emperor Gallienus. The imposing west front of the Wolfgangskirche was a demonstration of power against the lower-lying and then smaller parish church. In 1782 the church was abandoned and in 1796 it was taken out of consecration. Demolition work with the blasting of the vaults was not profitable and left a ruin. From 1860 to 1862 a reconstruction was made. In 1862 the church was consecrated anew. A fire on 6 April 1918 again left the church in ruins. From 1919 to 1926, work was done to restore the church with plans by the architect Richard Jordan.
