Skeleton of the right wing of a bald eagle, Haliaeetus leucocephalus (specimen UF O52443), a fluid-preserved specimen from the Florida Museum of Natural History, with elements colored to demonstrate forelimb anatomy. This scene was created by Jaimi Gray (oVert team) using pre-existing mesh files (see below) which were edited to separate, reposition, and color elements in Blender and Meshlab.
Segmentation and original mesh files made by Karina Riddell using Volumegraphics VGStudioMax 3.3 from a CT scan produced by a Phoenix V|Tome|X S. This model was captured following excavation of Trench 5 at Lisnamanore (CO084-084), Garranes, Co. Cork. Some 33 cubic metres of material was carefully removed by students of the MA in Archaeological Excavation (2013/14) to reveal the surface now exposed. This enclosure is some 65 metres in diameter and was originally enclosed by a stake/post fence and external ditch (approx. 1.25 metres deep). Note the linear arrangement of stakeholes marking the line of the fence. Two wide trenches running parallel across the surface are the remains of more recent cultivation (ridge-and-furrow) and have cut across earlier trench features. This site has been dated to the later part of the 5th Century AD. Approx 100m to the E is the well-known Garranes trivallate ringfort.
This trench has been back-filled and the site now fully reinstated. The model was generated using Agisoft with some further processing in MeshLab. Fly Geyser: In 1964, a well was drilled by Western Geothermal, geyser is formed by growth of travertine deposits from the water. The yellow, red and green colors represent different species of algae and serve as a kind of heat map. The orange color indicates presence of iron. There is a lot of aragonite in the formation. Temperature of water shooting from Fly Geyser is 225ºF.

A low poly version of my 3D reconstruction of Barack Obama made a few months ago.
I decimated the model with Meshlab, and then played with the filter gallery of Photoshop to simplified the texture.
Still think it’s possible to do better if we apply an average color to each polygon.

Today, I organised a 3D scanning workshop at ESSEC Business School. A brand new Knowledge Lab has been inaugurated a few months ago. It is a fab-lab for scientific and pedagogical innovation. Workshops on many different topics are organised on a regular basis, and today was about 3D scanning!
Now a few students know how to take good pictures with no shades, good lighting, and from any angle ; how to use Recap360 or Memento to turn those pictures into a 3D model ; how to enhance its mesh on Meshlab ; how to publish it on Sketchfab, edit it with the 3D Settings, publish it anywhere online, and enjoy it in VR straight from their cardboard!
Here was the object we used for the workshop, a set of coasters that look like tennis rackets. Well, we are not particularly fans of tennis in my family, even if we watch Roland-Garros as every French dudes do, so I have actually no idea why we have that at home.
