The Barge is a breakwater built to protect the house and terraces from waves. It was playfully designed to look like a boat. James Deering commissioned all of the sculptures from American artist Alexander Stirling Calder in 1915.
The local limestone that covers the Barge is soft and porous. The salt water and storm waves of Biscayne Bay have significantly eroded the Barge, threatening the stability of its statuary and decorative reliefs. Made of beautiful white marble, this bust represents François Thevenot sculpted by Gazzeri (signature engraved on the lower rear side). It is one of the many beautiful statues in the “Domaine Chavat” in Podensac near the river Garonne. François Thevenot bought this property in 1914, restored the gardens which hosts many beautiful statues, including this one.
This statue is about twice life-sized, and the white marble is so pure that it is difficult to scan and volume is difficult to read in shadeless mode. The few specs of green are due to moss on this outdoor statue.
This work was commissionned by the french company Socra, as a preliminary scan before possible restoration of the statuary of the park.

This statue was commissioned by the French government after the defeat of the country in the 1870 Franco-Prussian War. It is the only public commission of the state from 1870 to 1914, called the Golden Age of statuary in Paris, the other statues were funded by private subscriptions.
The sculptor took as his model Aimée Girod (1856–1937), a young woman from Domrémy, Joan of Arc’s village in Lorraine. The monument was classified as a historic monument on March 31, 1992.
