The medieval chess pieces from the Scottish island of Lewis are among our most popular collections. They give us fascinating insights into the international connections of western Scotland and the growing popularity of chess in medieval Europe.
The eleven chess pieces on display in the Museum of Scotland were part of a large hoard buried on Lewis. The hoard contained 93 gaming pieces in total, including at least four chess sets as well as pieces from other games. The chess pieces were probably made in the late 12th or early 13th century in Norway.

And with it, my first year here, in Sketchfab. A long path that actually has passed so fast to me.
Since that day that I decided to create my portfolio online, I´ve improved my modeling skills in someway, I suppose.
Proof of that is my first appearance in a videogame credits as Environment & Asset Artist.
And the result of all these feelings, is this tribute to my all time favourite surreal Artist.
In an attempt to traslate the magic of the oniric world that René Magritte created in 1936,
I´m so proud with the result, trying to go beyond the canvas…

Pre-Columbian Maya bat god sculpture curated in the Museo Popol Vuh in Guatemala City- Catalogue no. 2005-0032. This sculpture dates to the Late Preclassic and could likely originates from the Copan area of Honduras, bordering Guatemala. The monument is tenoned and could have been used as ornamentation on a structure. The glyphic text on the head and back of the piece relate to the monument’s dedication and ownership. Bats were an important motif depicted in Maya art and glyphic text, and depending on the context, possibly represented a harbinger of death, sacrifice, or the underworld, and often shown representing a particular cultural group.

A finely decorated silver-gilt casket, made in Paris around 1490-1510, and believed to have been owned by Mary, Queen of Scots. It is an extremely rare example of French silver from the Renaissance era because much was melted down for their precious metals. Its survival attests to its association with Mary, and it has been treasured as a relic of this unfortunate queen by the Dukes of Hamilton for over 340 years.
Its particular renown derives from the belief that it is the casket that was dramatically produced at a hearing against Mary at Westminster in 1568, containing the notorious ‘Casket Letters’, used as evidence of the queen’s complicity in the murder of her husband Henry, Lord Darnley.

Death troopers were an elite variant of the Galactic Empire’s stormtroopers specializing in stealth, espionage, and lethality. Operating under Imperial Intelligence, they served as a protective detachment for important Imperial officers and members of the Tarkin Initiative, as well as special assignment commandos. They wore black body armor suits and specialized helmets with voice scramblers, micro-motion sensors and heads-up displays with data on enemy and friendly positions on the battlefield. Death troopers were trained in unarmed combat, heavy weapons, demolitions, improvised weapons, guerrilla warfare, and marksmanship. Experts to cover their tracks, the Death Troopers left little to no evidence of their missions. I’m proud to finally present a project I’ve been working on since 2015: A diorama scene depicting the Battle of Hoth from “Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back”.
My ultimate goal was to present drama and emotion through percieved detail while limiting my polycount as much as possible; Putting weight and motion into each hand-posed character to mimic the feeling one might get looking at a table with wargaming miniatures.
The concept was partially inspired by the Halo 3 “Believe” ad series.
Workflow:
No external textures were used, only vertex color painting and some baking for PBR compatability and reduced file size.
Done 100% in Blender3D.
What I Learned in the Process:
Getting to extensively use vertex painting was one of the most fun aspects of this project. I also gained a lot of experience in basic character modelling, and until now, I had never used Blender’s rigging system.
I gained so much more confidence in Cycles materials, and particle effects as well.
