Build by the Venetians at the end of the 16th century it was reconstructed by the Egyptians in the form of minaret during the Egyptian period around 1830-40. During the Turkish Occupation, the lighthouse was abandoned. The current lighthouse tower is mounted on a trapezoidal base which holds since the Venetian Era. The tower is divided in three parts: an octagonal lower part, the middle part with sixteen sides, and the third part which is circular. The lighthouse was leaning badly due to bombings during WWII and earthquakes but was renovated in 2005-6.
