An ancient Egyptian arched sistrum (musical percussion instrument similar to a rattle). The provenance is unknown as the piece was purchased in Luxor in 1908. It likely dates to the Late Period. The sistrum is pierced twice on each side of the arch where the moving pieces would have been inserted. Below the arch, we see a wedjat eye above a nb-sign. Hathor’s head is flanked by two columns and bears her characteristic plaited wig. This example is unusual for the lack of a double headed Hathor, only one side bears Hathor’s face with the back of the sistrum featuring the sun disk and horns (Hathor’s symbol). This helmet, with its rather special appearance, is one of the few preserved objects that we know was owned by the Swedish king Gustav Vasa. It was made in Germany in 1540, probably in Augsburg or Nuremberg, which were home to some of the most skilled armour makers of the time. The visor, the part that covers the face, did not originally belong to the helmet, but it is thought to be of the same period. A helmet of this type was made not for battle but for celebratory occasions. In the 16th century, full suits of steel armour were the height of fashion. For parades and other royal festivities, the social elite would dress up in specially-made sets of costume armour with a close helmet. Abukuma cave was discovered while mining for limestones from the current Kamayama quarry in September 1969. In 1973 the inner cavern was developed for tourism then was open to the general public. The route for sightseeing is 600 m. Together with the route closed to the public, it has a total length of 3,300 m. Though that number may change due to investigations in the future. Abukuma cave is presumed to have its limestones crystallized approximately 80 million years ago (the latter cretaceous period). The archaeological site of Pyrgos Ragiou (Tower of Ragio) occupies the top of a hill in the middle of the Ragio - Kestrini plain, near the old estuary of the River Kalamas. It was probably an inland stronghold of the nearby 5th century BC seaside settlement on the Lygia Peninsula, which possibly corresponds with ancient Toroni, the Corfian mainland base mentioned by Thucydides. Part of the wider Corfiot installation area was the small fortress Pyrgos Ragiou, which protects the main settlement of Ligia from the inland, while providing shelter to the population in times of war. It owes its modern name to the tower of the Ottoman period, which dominates the hilltop, built up right above the tower of the ancient fortification of the 5th century BC. Anse de Laurons 2 is the wreck of a small Roman period sailing vessel dating to the end of the 3rd century CE, which probably sank during a storm while sheltering in the shallow harbor at Laurons, just west of Marseille in modern France. At only about 15m in length and with an estimated displacement of around 30 tons, it probably only traded between small harbors along the local coastline. When it sank, the port-side was quickly covered in sediment ensuring excellent preservation up to the deck and even the railing. Rigging elements, a spare rudder, and possible fragments from wooden panels that may have covered the hold, along with rarely-preserved structures for supporting the side rudders (the side “wings” you see in a lot of Roman period art). This reconstruction is based on plans by R. Bockius. The decorative elements are hypothetical, based on contemporary paintings and mosaics. Object curated by the The Bishop Museum of Science and Nature (formerly the South Florida Museum), Bradenton, FL. This object (#A143), is from the Tallant collections received in c. 1940. This piece was noted by archaeologist John Mann Goggin as possibly being related to the Glades III Period in Florida prehistory (AD 1200-1763). Goggin only saw images and a drawing of the piece, and its true provenance and dating remain unknown. The small, 10.5 cm high piece appears to be that of an anthropomorphic owl. The archaeological dye-house layout consists of three double-eyed rows, with thirteen basins in each row.
