Caerlaverock Castle was the chief seat of the Maxwells, one of the great noble families in southern Scotland.
The castle is famous in history and literature through its siege by Edward I of England in 1300, commemorated in the contemporary poem, The Siege of Caerlaverock. It was captured in 1640 by the Covenanters after a protracted siege and thereafter abandoned as a lordly residence.

The Half Moon Battery, built in the aftermath of the Lang Siege of 1573, was armed for 200 years by bronze guns known as the Seven Sisters. The carving is made of Scottish Oak and was made by the Clow brothers from a design by Alice Meredith-Williams.
The Scottish War Memorial opened in 1927 after the former North Barracks were altered. It is located at the North side of Crown Square, at the site of the church of St Mary, previously used as munitions store in the 1530s.
