The arrival of mechanical movable type printing introduced the era of mass communication, which permanently altered the structure of society. This was a dramatic improvement and allowed books to be acquired by the middle class for the first time in the history of Europe. ‘Speed’ (1920s) is one of Antonio Sciortino’s equine sculptures but it aims to express an abstract concept, that of speed. The horses seem to blend into one another as they race forward and are reduced to little more than horizontal lines. The stylisation of the sculpture betrays an Art Deco influence, but the concept and the use of lines to depict movement look towards Futurism. The lines are the gushes of displaced air caused by the forward projectile movement of the horses. Only the horses’ heads with flaring nostrils and their front legs remind us that this is a figurative work. Coffin of the Pharaoh Akenaten in the Egyptian Museum, Cairo, Egypt. This coffin was recovered from a tomb in the Valley of the Kings in what has been designated Tomb KV55. The tomb was discovered by Edward R. Ayrton in 1907 while working for the wealthy American Theodore M. Davis. The tomb has been controversial since it’s discovery, originally being designated the burial of Queen Tiye. It has now been shown through DNA analysis that the remains found in the tomb are those of Akenaten himself. The DNA has further demonstrated that Akhenaten was the father of Tutankhamen (King Tut). The face of the coffin and the name in the cartouche have been deliberately removed in an attempt to condemn the “heretic” pharaoh in the afterlife and erase his memory. Though it ended up a bit too polygon-heavy, I am still happy how this turned out. My main difficulty was to render out curvature maps for the rust and scratch effects in Substance painter, but Xnormal does a good enough job after some tweaking around in Substance Painter. This is a model based off of Joe Petagno’s cover art for the 1986 album “Orgasmatron” by Motörhead. Petagno is the original artist behind Motörheads famous boar-like figurehead and the guy behind their album art. He has also created Led Zeppelins famous Icarus character and artwork for many other bands of different genres, even covers for sci-fi books. I was approached by BuildersBrew to create a small diorama of a Medieval Farmer ploughing the fields, this was based off of some references provided and is to be used within the immersive mobile app for The Chester House Estate. Conservation with the overall tricount, texture space and alpha usage in the project was important to make sure the model could load well in the application, the texture for the character was 4k for this render however this was reduced to 2k in the application and the overall tricount came in at around 70k for the whole project. Location Rhyolite is a ghost town in Nye County, in the U.S. state of Nevada. It is in the Bullfrog Hills, about 120 miles (190 km) northwest of Las Vegas, near the eastern edge of Death Valley. The town began in early 1905 as one of several mining camps that sprang up after a prospecting discovery in the surrounding hills. During an ensuing gold rush, thousands of gold-seekers, developers, miners and service providers flocked to the Bullfrog Mining District.
