The light-dependent reactions involved in photosynthesis occur within the stacked thylakoid chambers, which contain aqueous lumen. The thylakoid stacks connect via the lamellae to form an integrated functional unit. The photosynthetic pigment chlorophyll, responsible for making plants green, is embedded in the membrane of the thylakoids.
