This little garden was created primarily for practice; I wanted to create a new environment but keep the scope relatively small. A garden is perfect because in some ways it resembles a little world, with its own creatures, foliage and landscape. My texturing/material skills are not a strength yet so I was keen on exploring what detail I could achieve with using very simple painted textures. The whole project was mainly created using Blender, with a little bit of Photoshop for painting and post processing. The HDRI environment texture used was sourced from https://hdrihaven.com/ “nagoya_wall_path”. At first I was planning to just produce a render from one angle, but later decided it would be nice to show off in Sketchfab. I then baked all textures for import into Sketchfab, it was a busy scene so I had to make some sacrifices in texture quality. Original Artwork by Moniek Schilder: https://www.artstation.com/artwork/9mG6my I saw this beautiful sword design by Moniek Schilder here on Artstation and felt immediately drawn to it. I knew I wanted to try a modeling a weapon while still exploring a stylized texturing technique. I hope I did Moniek’s design justice! There are multiple things I’m pleased with on this project and multiple things I hope to resolve better in the future. One thing I’m particularly proud of is the damaged portion of the flat part of the blade, which I actually “painted” the normals for in Substance Painter! My dear friend Weston (https://www.artstation.com/westontjones) suggested I try that when I realized I forgot to sculpt the damage in Zbrush. Something I hope to learn from is the lighting issue on the handle, which is related to how I UV’d this piece. Overall, I am pleased with my growth in the past two projects! The model has had several parts removed and paint stripped back during an historic attempt at restoration, which has frustrated specific identification. Some elements are suggestive of a Mediaeval cog, especially hull dimensions, keel design and clinker build. Another comparison would be a mid-to-late-18th-century or early 19th-century merchant, or naval, brig. Brigs were two-masted, square-rigged ships which normally had a spanker sail set on the lower mainmast. The foremast was the shorter of the two masts. They were used as both naval and merchant vessels. If this ship is based on a naval vessel it would be classed as a sixth-rate (having 20-28 guns on a single deck) as there are 22 gun-ports. This was mainly exploring environment building inside of Unreal Engine, and experimenting with wind simulation inside of Houdini.
