The set was gifted to the museum by St Mary’s Cathedral, Aberdeen and dates from 1860 – 1870 which was the period when St Mary’s became the Cathedral. Caerlaverock Castle stands largely complete and is amongst the foremost examples of Scottish medieval secular architecture. Its triangular-shaped curtain wall is unique in Britain, and the Nithsdale Lodging within, dating from the 1630s, is one of the finest examples of Renaissance architecture in Scotland.
Caerlaverock Castle was the chief seat of the Maxwells, one of the great noble families in southern Scotland.
The castle is famous in history and literature through its siege by Edward I of England in 1300, commemorated in the contemporary poem, The Siege of Caerlaverock. It was captured in 1640 by the Covenanters after a protracted siege and thereafter abandoned as a lordly residence.

Large pendant containing a carefully shaped metamorphic stone in a gold case decorated with filigree and granulation.
This object forms part of the Galloway Hoard, the richest collection of rare and unique Viking-age objects ever found in Britain or Ireland. Buried around AD 900, the Galloway Hoard contains over 100 diverse objects, from silver, gold and jewelled treasures to rarely surviving textiles, including wool, linen and Scotland’s earliest examples of silk.

A Samian ware platter from Falkirk, possibly associated with Camelon fort. It is 5cm high and 18cm in diameter. It was made near Lezoux in France and the maker’s mark ’ RIIOGENIM ‘, which translates as ‘Ritogenus’, is stamped on the inside of the base.
Fine dishes such as these would have been used by the Roman officers and their families stationed in the forts along the Antonine Wall.
The Antonine Wall stretched right across Scotland, from the Clyde to the Forth. Constructed around 142 AD, and occupied for only 20 years, the remains of its ramparts, steep ditches, forts and bathhouses are still visible today. Since 2008, it has been part of the Frontiers of the Roman Empire World Heritage Site.

Exploring Castle Hill is part of a Cultural Heritage and Archaeology Project being led by Northlight Heritage for Garnock Connections.
