Buckie House, Anstruther, Fife, Scotland. Buckie House (also informally known as the Shell House) was built in the late 17th century. In the 1840s the then owner Alex Batchelor extensively decorated the house with seashells, both inside and out. Alex also went on the decorate his own coffin which was also adorned with sea shells which he charged people to see. Restoration work was carried out on the exterior in 1968 and 2010. The house is situated on the corner of Elizabeth Place and High Street West which form part of the main road through Anstruther, this leaves the building and its decoration vulnerable to damage from large vehicles negotiating the corner. Most of the photographs were taken from across the street with a few from the middle of the road when there was no traffic. The medieval chess pieces from the Scottish island of Lewis are among our most popular collections. They give us fascinating insights into the international connections of western Scotland and the growing popularity of chess in medieval Europe. The eleven chess pieces on display in the Museum of Scotland were part of a large hoard buried on Lewis. This is a turned wassail bowl with decorations from Duff House. The ancient New Year practice of ‘wassailing’ was practiced in England, Scotland and Wales. Parties progressed from house to house with greetings for the health and prosperity of the inhabitants, which were acknowledged by communal drinking out of a Wassail bowl. Although the drink differed from region to region, it usually contained a mixture of spiced ale, wine or cider. The term ‘wassail’ comes from the Anglo-Saxon ‘waes-hael’, which was the equivalent of the drinking toast ‘good health’ today. Wassail bowls can be ceramic or wood. A WWII radar station on Ward Hill, Fair Isle, it was a Coast Defence U-boat (C.D.U.) station which was the naval version of the R.A.F.’s Chain Home Low (C.H.L.) radar. Radar was used here to track shipping and surfaced submarines and at longer distances aircraft. Something that makes this site unusual is that parts of the antennas and their turntables still survive here. After the war the site was partially dismantled then some buildings/structures blown up with explosives. Damage to the floors indicate where some of the charges were set. Fair Isle is situated about half way between the Orkney Isles and the Shetland Isles off the north coast of Scotland.
