This structure is part of Launch Complex 26 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, Brevard County, Florida. This historic complex has served two primary functions – as a launch facility and as a museum. The LC-26 site was associated with the Redstone research and development program and later the Jupiter program. Additionally, the first American satellite, Explorer I, was famously launched from LC-26 on January 31, 1958. Pre-Columbian Maya bat god sculpture curated in the Museo Popol Vuh in Guatemala City- Catalogue no. 2005-0032. This sculpture dates to the Late Preclassic and could likely originates from the Copan area of Honduras, bordering Guatemala. The monument is tenoned and could have been used as ornamentation on a structure. The glyphic text on the head and back of the piece relate to the monument’s dedication and ownership. Bats were an important motif depicted in Maya art and glyphic text, and depending on the context, possibly represented a harbinger of death, sacrifice, or the underworld, and often shown representing a particular cultural group. Ornately carved sandstone stela from the Archaeological Park and Ruins of Quiriguá, an inscribed UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Department of Izabal, Guatemala. The piece was 3D laser scanned in 2019 during the extensive documentation survey at the site by our USF Libraries DHHC team. Currently on museum display at the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument in St. Augustine, Florida, this piece originally was located above the ravelin structure - a smaller fortification that provided a first line of defense at the entrance of the fort. This Coat of Arms was removed in 1957 to conserve the piece, and has been on display allowing visitors to the National Park to see it up-close. Today, a replica has been placed where the original Coat of Arms was found. As part of our comprehensive 3D survey, we used structured light scanning and imaging to document both the replica and the original piece. Our data is being used for digital archival preservation, conservation, additional replica creation, and for 3D modeling and public engagement. Our Sketchfab design uses an historic image of the ravelin structure from 1895, showing the Coat of Arms as it was, before its removal.
