The eleven chess pieces on display in the Museum of Scotland were part of a large hoard buried on Lewis. The hoard contained 93 gaming pieces in total, including at least four chess sets as well as pieces from other games. It was demolished and then abandoned in the first half of the 16th century by the Ottoman conquest of Hungary, after which the fort lost it’s primary role. It was in a pretty bad shape until the 20th century, when its value was recognised and its first restoration happened.
