When I began studying 3D Animation & VFX, I had challenged myself to create a model from scratch to get a feel for Maya, the program I had shifted to at the beginning of my course. The texture set was created using Substance Painter, which I had found complicated to use but managable since in some respects it was similar to Photoshop, a program I am very familar with. Moving on to the asset itself, I decided to create the fabled Colt from the TV show supernatural. This project took longer than I want to admit, with there being tweaks in the model and textures throughout the whole ordeal. The model itself is my interpretation of The Colt, using reference images from the TV show itself and other sources that provided details such as the engravings on the gun. Overall, the project was fun to make and I’m quite pleased with the final results. I uploaded the sword alone previously and planned to upload its sheath separately, but eventually decided put them together so it can have a complete showcase as a set. Both high res model and all the details made in Zbrush, painted the texture in substance painter. The animal on the sheath at first was just flat shapes with no details on it, and I thought I finished the model. Later on I looked at it again and again, eventually decided I should add more details and to make the animal figures more alive and to give them more characters, since this was a sword made for Paraoh’s battles, it just has to have that spirit. Painting the texture was another challenge since there are just so many details on the original antique. Made this piece with a heart of awe, and it was a great learning experience! This is the nearly end result of a workflow I went almost alone. From reference material research, rising up some sketchy concepts, to a rich story reflecting design. The 3D model came from an endless iteration witch alowed me to go back and forth until what you see now. Backing and textures are full of errors, even UV maps are partially opened. But Im not working on it for now, so decided to share it as it is. Call it nostalgia, but I’ve always loved the look of the turtles from the original 1990 film. It blew me away that they took these relatively simple drawings, and brought to life these really realistic humanoid turtles. I remember losing my mind when I first saw them. When I started working on this by chance, there were these new turtle figures out that had captured quite a bit of the detail from the movie costumes so I used those as reference heavily. I built this model with high end game cinematics in mind, base model was around 83k before smoothed. He will eventually have a full working facial rig with mouth cavity....just getting lazy here towards the end on him..haha. The skin I ended up using one of the default new orc skin templates in painter and messed around with the layers in that with some of my own custom additions and I think it turned out fairly nice.
