The gold and silver embroidery is particularly outstanding in this example and has been worked over card to achieve a raised effect. The set was gifted to the museum by St Mary’s Cathedral, Aberdeen and dates from 1860 – 1870 which was the period when St Mary’s became the Cathedral. The medieval chess pieces from the Scottish island of Lewis are among our most popular collections. They give us fascinating insights into the international connections of western Scotland and the growing popularity of chess in medieval Europe.
The eleven chess pieces on display in the Museum of Scotland were part of a large hoard buried on Lewis. The hoard contained 93 gaming pieces in total, including at least four chess sets as well as pieces from other games. The chess pieces were probably made in the late 12th or early 13th century in Norway.

This cope and hood dates from around 1860 and features the four Evangelists’ emblems and their names in Latin: St Matthew (the Winged Man), St. Mark (the Winged Lion); the Luke (the Winged Ox); St John (the Eagle). The sacred monogram of Jesus ‘I.H.S.’ is in the centre of a cross, with stylised flowers and pomegranites.
The hood features Christ and St. John the Beloved, surmounted by the Sacred Heart with Flames, Crown of Thorns, Anchor and Cross. The techniques used are needle painting in coloured silks and gold crouching, trimmed with a heavy gold bullion fringe. A mitre is a bishop or abbot’s distinctive ceremonial head-dress. This mitre is hand embroidered and is set with semi-precious and non-precious stones. This mitre came from St James Abbey, Ratisbon (now Regensburg), Germany.
