Buckie House, Anstruther, Fife, Scotland. Buckie House (also informally known as the Shell House) was built in the late 17th century. In the 1840s the then owner Alex Batchelor extensively decorated the house with seashells, both inside and out. Alex also went on the decorate his own coffin which was also adorned with sea shells which he charged people to see. Restoration work was carried out on the exterior in 1968 and 2010. The house is situated on the corner of Elizabeth Place and High Street West which form part of the main road through Anstruther, this leaves the building and its decoration vulnerable to damage from large vehicles negotiating the corner. Most of the photographs were taken from across the street with a few from the middle of the road when there was no traffic. The medieval chess pieces from the Scottish island of Lewis are among our most popular collections. This timber carving of the archangel St Michael stands at 3.3 metres tall, with its large medallion engraved with a cross coming in at 5.4 meters and is suspended from the vaulted ceiling on the Scottish National War Memorial 9.3 metres above the casket that holds the Roll of Honour of the Scottish War Dead. The carving is made of Scottish Oak and was made by the Clow brothers from a design by Alice Meredith-Williams. The Scottish War Memorial opened in 1927 after the former North Barracks were altered. It is located at the North side of Crown Square, at the site of the church of St Mary, previously used as munitions store in the 1530s. A Samian ware platter from Falkirk, possibly associated with Camelon fort. It is 5cm high and 18cm in diameter. It was made near Lezoux in France and the maker’s mark ’ RIIOGENIM ‘, which translates as ‘Ritogenus’, is stamped on the inside of the base. Fine dishes such as these would have been used by the Roman officers and their families stationed in the forts along the Antonine Wall. The Antonine Wall stretched right across Scotland, from the Clyde to the Forth. Constructed around 142 AD, and occupied for only 20 years, the remains of its ramparts, steep ditches, forts and bathhouses are still visible today. A WWII radar station on Ward Hill, Fair Isle, it was a Coast Defence U-boat (C.D.U.) station which was the naval version of the R.A.F.’s Chain Home Low (C.H.L.) radar. Radar was used here to track shipping and surfaced submarines and at longer distances aircraft. Something that makes this site unusual is that parts of the antennas and their turntables still survive here. After the war the site was partially dismantled then some buildings/structures blown up with explosives. Damage to the floors indicate where some of the charges were set. Fair Isle is situated about half way between the Orkney Isles and the Shetland Isles off the north coast of Scotland. A multi-faced sundial in the churchyard of St Marys Church, Elmley Castle, Worcestershire, UK.
