A mitre is a bishop or abbot’s distinctive ceremonial head-dress. This mitre is hand embroidered and is set with semi-precious and non-precious stones. This mitre came from St James Abbey, Ratisbon (now Regensburg), Germany. After the abbey closed, the mitre went with the last of the Scottish monks to the new abbey they founded at Fort Augustus in 1862. A finely decorated silver-gilt casket, made in Paris around 1490-1510, and believed to have been owned by Mary, Queen of Scots. It is an extremely rare example of French silver from the Renaissance era because much was melted down for their precious metals. Its survival attests to its association with Mary, and it has been treasured as a relic of this unfortunate queen by the Dukes of Hamilton for over 340 years.
Its particular renown derives from the belief that it is the casket that was dramatically produced at a hearing against Mary at Westminster in 1568, containing the notorious ‘Casket Letters’, used as evidence of the queen’s complicity in the murder of her husband Henry, Lord Darnley.

The medieval chess pieces from the Scottish island of Lewis are among our most popular collections. They give us fascinating insights into the international connections of western Scotland and the growing popularity of chess in medieval Europe.
The eleven chess pieces on display in the Museum of Scotland were part of a large hoard buried on Lewis. The hoard contained 93 gaming pieces in total, including at least four chess sets as well as pieces from other games. The chess pieces were probably made in the late 12th or early 13th century in Norway.

A WWII radar station on Ward Hill, Fair Isle, it was a Coast Defence U-boat (C.D.U.) station which was the naval version of the R.A.F.’s Chain Home Low (C.H.L.) radar. Radar was used here to track shipping and surfaced submarines and at longer distances aircraft. Something that makes this site unusual is that parts of the antennas and their turntables still survive here. After the war the site was partially dismantled then some buildings/structures blown up with explosives. Damage to the floors indicate where some of the charges were set.
Fair Isle is situated about half way between the Orkney Isles and the Shetland Isles off the north coast of Scotland.
