So, I decided to use this diorama school project as a way to explore what 3d can offer and how it looks it other completely different styles.
I went on a completely different direction from my first project (treasure chest) going from a some what realistic hand painted to the most stylized texture I could do. I decided to do cell shading for this one, although cell shading material doesn’t export to sketchfab I decided to duplicate every object and flip it’s polygons to give a similar ilusion, ence the diorama having the double of the budget tri on sketchfab. I’m proud to finally present a project I’ve been working on since 2015: A diorama scene depicting the Battle of Hoth from “Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back”.
My ultimate goal was to present drama and emotion through percieved detail while limiting my polycount as much as possible; Putting weight and motion into each hand-posed character to mimic the feeling one might get looking at a table with wargaming miniatures.
The concept was partially inspired by the Halo 3 “Believe” ad series.
Workflow:
No external textures were used, only vertex color painting and some baking for PBR compatability and reduced file size.
Done 100% in Blender3D.
What I Learned in the Process:
Getting to extensively use vertex painting was one of the most fun aspects of this project. I also gained a lot of experience in basic character modelling, and until now, I had never used Blender’s rigging system.
I gained so much more confidence in Cycles materials, and particle effects as well.
