Ornately carved sandstone stela from the Archaeological Park and Ruins of Quiriguá, an inscribed UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Department of Izabal, Guatemala. The piece was 3D laser scanned in 2019 during the extensive documentation survey at the site by our USF Libraries DHHC team. We utilized structured light scanners at various resolutions on this monument as well as imaging and longer range laser scanning to capture landscape context details. Pre-Columbian Maya bat god sculpture curated in the Museo Popol Vuh in Guatemala City- Catalogue no. 2005-0032. This sculpture dates to the Late Preclassic and could likely originates from the Copan area of Honduras, bordering Guatemala. The monument is tenoned and could have been used as ornamentation on a structure. The glyphic text on the head and back of the piece relate to the monument’s dedication and ownership. Bats were an important motif depicted in Maya art and glyphic text, and depending on the context, possibly represented a harbinger of death, sacrifice, or the underworld, and often shown representing a particular cultural group.
Part of a 3D digitization initiative with the Popol Vuh Museum in Guatemala City, and in collaboration with Camilo Luin, Curator, the Digital Heritage and Humanities Center at the University of South Florida Libraries,has partnered to document important sculpture and artifacts. This exquisite drinking cup for atol in the collection of the Snite Museum of Art at the University of Notre Dame (cat. # 1982.053) is adorned along the rim with jaguar prints on the inside and hieroglyphs on the outside. The previously unpublished inscription is one of the finest examples of seventh-century Maya caligraphy and contains rare variants of number 9 and TZ’AK. There are no personal names or place names. The text only states that the cup belonged to “the artisan of the eternal lord”. The orthography of the inscription is rather unusual: the scribe apparently tried to arrange the text so that it would consist of 20 characters in 11 segments (blocks) with an extra visual emphasis on the word “eternal (bolon tz’akbuul)”. Description: Three larger fragments of the “black altar” and one smaller partial fragment area. This carved scene contains three figures and two hieroglyph block areas. The piece is on display at the Museo Nacional de Arqueología y Etnología in Guatemala City. It sits on a cement block and wood display cradle, and is in the salon including many sculptures from Kaminaljuyu. University of South Florida researchers Travis Doering and Lori Collins documented the piece using triangulation scanning, and the USF Libraries Digital Heritage and Humanities Collections model of the 3D data highlights the carved surface details with shading and rendering using ambient occlusion.

Colored-in tortoise plastron with oracular inscription
This artifact dates to the late Shang period 1; it is a divination inscription of Wu Ding. Cinnabar ink was painted upon part of the scripts. The inscribed texts record how on the day of binzi, the diviner, Wei, asked two questions in a positive-and-negative pair: “a bountiful year for me” or “a poor year for me,” to prophesize whether there would be a good harvest that year. Generally, oracular inscriptions are carved beside the divination cracks to avoid them, which is called bi zhao. Interestingly, on this artifact, there is text inscribed upon the divination cracks, which is called fan zhao.

The Temple of Jupiter is a colossal Roman temple, the largest of the Roman world, situated at the Baalbek complex in Heliopolis Syriaca, Lebanon. The temple served as an oracle and was dedicated to Jupiter Heliopolitanus.
It is not known who commissioned or designed the temple, nor exactly when it was constructed. Work probably began around 16 BC and was nearly complete by about AD 60. Chichen Itza was a large pre-Columbian city built by the Maya people of the Terminal Classic period. The archeological site is located in Tinúm Municipality, Yucatán State, Mexico.
Chichen Itza was a major focal point in the Northern Maya Lowlands from the Late Classic (c. AD 600–900) through the Terminal Classic (c. AD 800–900) and into the early portion of the Postclassic period (c. AD 900–1200). The site exhibits a multitude of architectural styles, reminiscent of styles seen in central Mexico and of the Puuc and Chenes styles of the Northern Maya lowlands. The presence of central Mexican styles was once thought to have been representative of direct migration or even conquest from central Mexico, but most contemporary interpretations view the presence of these non-Maya styles more as the result of cultural diffusion.
