When I began studying 3D Animation & VFX, I had challenged myself to create a model from scratch to get a feel for Maya, the program I had shifted to at the beginning of my course. The texture set was created using Substance Painter, which I had found complicated to use but managable since in some respects it was similar to Photoshop, a program I am very familar with. Moving on to the asset itself, I decided to create the fabled Colt from the TV show supernatural. This project took longer than I want to admit, with there being tweaks in the model and textures throughout the whole ordeal. The model itself is my interpretation of The Colt, using reference images from the TV show itself and other sources that provided details such as the engravings on the gun. Overall, the project was fun to make and I’m quite pleased with the final results. I uploaded the sword alone previously and planned to upload its sheath separately, but eventually decided put them together so it can have a complete showcase as a set. Both high res model and all the details made in Zbrush, painted the texture in substance painter. The animal on the sheath at first was just flat shapes with no details on it, and I thought I finished the model. Later on I looked at it again and again, eventually decided I should add more details and to make the animal figures more alive and to give them more characters, since this was a sword made for Paraoh’s battles, it just has to have that spirit. Painting the texture was another challenge since there are just so many details on the original antique. Made this piece with a heart of awe, and it was a great learning experience! We have been planning to recreate this photo as a sculpture for Burning Man, and in preparation for this, we invited a model to help recreate the scene using 3D scanning technology. I scanned her several times, using both Photogrammetry & the Structure Sensor combined with Itseez 3D scanning software. We ended up using the Structure scan because the quality was a bit better. We will repeat the process with several models to compile them into the ideal scan & then begin the process of converting the mesh into a structure made either out of metal or wood.
