The castle was built in 1342 on the largest of the islands in the Lake Alūksne and called Marienburg. The first castle was constructed by the Landmeister Burkhard von Dreileben. It was part of a major reinforcement of the Eastern border of Livonia. The strength of the castle was repeatedly proven by repelling a number of attacks in the 16th century. After the fall of the Old Livonia, the castle remained habitable. It was finally destroyed in 1702 in the Great Northern War by its Swedish garrison to avoid falling in the hands of Russians. In 1782 the church was abandoned and in 1796 it was taken out of consecration. Demolition work with the blasting of the vaults was not profitable and left a ruin. From 1860 to 1862 a reconstruction was made. In 1862 the church was consecrated anew. A fire on 6 April 1918 again left the church in ruins. From 1919 to 1926, work was done to restore the church with plans by the architect Richard Jordan.
