Vasa was a Swedish warship that capsized and sank off Beckholmen in Stockholm’s inlet on its maiden voyage, August 10, 1628. After some early unsuccessful attempts to rescue her in the 17th century, Vaasa was largely forgotten. The ship’s approximate position remained known until the middle of the 19th century, but no serious attempts were made to salvage it. In 1956, the amateur researcher and engineer Anders Franzén, together with the diver Per Edvin Fälting, succeeded in re-establishing Vaasa’s exact position and after several years of marine archeological excavations and preparations, Vasa was lifted above the water surface on April 24, 1961. Since 1990 the ship is included in a permanent exhibition in Stockholm. It was sculpted and polypainted in ZBrush, unwrapped and baked in 3DSMax and the texture’s “fine tunning” was made in Photoshop. The scene will be posted next! The concept: One South Church features a new roof in the form of a glass cylinder which telescopes at the top with 3 half story steps; increasing the height of One South Church from 330’ to 342’. ‘Two South Church’ is a new building at the SE corner where One South Church’s never built twin would have stood. It rises 462’ as a taller sibling with the same facade and tower shape with symmetrical setback heights. Its roof features a glass pyramid which could be used for similar purposes as One South Church. This model was captured following excavation of Trench 5 at Lisnamanore (CO084-084), Garranes, Co. Cork. Some 33 cubic metres of material was carefully removed by students of the MA in Archaeological Excavation (2013/14) to reveal the surface now exposed. This enclosure is some 65 metres in diameter and was originally enclosed by a stake/post fence and external ditch (approx. 1.25 metres deep). Note the linear arrangement of stakeholes marking the line of the fence. Two wide trenches running parallel across the surface are the remains of more recent cultivation (ridge-and-furrow) and have cut across earlier trench features. This site has been dated to the later part of the 5th Century AD. Approx 100m to the E is the well-known Garranes trivallate ringfort. This trench has been back-filled and the site now fully reinstated. The model was generated using Agisoft with some further processing in MeshLab.
