These polychromed metopes once decorated the porches of the Temple of Zeus in Olympia (c. 460 BCE); the remains are in the Olympia Archaeological Museum and the Louvre. The series depicts the twelve labors of Heracles. The original metopes were sculpted in high relief; the color schemes are based on research and aesthetic judgment. Roman statuette of Heracles. The statuette is missing both feet and the right hand. The youthful, unbearded Heracles wears a large-leaved wreath of ivy with fruit (corymb) in his hair. The lion’s skin is thrown over the left shoulder and arm, with the lion’s head resting on the shoulder and the paws and tail hanging down to the calf. The outstretched right hand was perhaps holding a drinking vessel, the left is propped on the hip and holding the club. There is a certain pathos in the serious facial expression, the lips are slightly open, the pupils were probably set in silver. The hairstyle is reminiscent of portraits of Alexander the Great. Judging by the execution and style, it must be an imported piece, probably from Italy. Bronze, h 12 cm; 1st-2nd century AD.
